WordPress Technical SEO Checklist
A practical pre-launch and maintenance checklist for crawlability, indexation, canonicals, redirects, mobile usability, performance, structured data, and site hygiene.
Make sure search engines can reach the right pages.
Search visibility
Confirm WordPress is not set to discourage search engines on the live site.
Robots.txt
Confirm robots.txt is reachable and is not accidentally blocking important public sections.
XML sitemap
Confirm the sitemap loads and includes the public pages and posts you actually want discovered.
Noindex review
Check staging, thin utility pages, duplicate archives, or private material for appropriate indexation settings.
Canonical URLs
Verify important pages point to the preferred public URL rather than a staging, parameterized, or duplicate version.
Protect useful URLs when the site changes.
Readable permalinks
Use descriptive, stable URLs rather than IDs or unnecessary parameter strings.
Redirect map
When URLs change, map important old URLs to the closest relevant new destination instead of sending everything to the home page.
Internal links
Update menus, buttons, articles and service pages so they point directly to the preferred URL rather than relying on redirects.
404 review
Check removed or mistyped URLs return a real 404 response rather than a misleading successful page.
HTTPS consistency
Confirm HTTP and alternate host versions resolve consistently to the preferred HTTPS site.
Give each important page a clean technical foundation.
Title tag
Use a descriptive title that reflects the page subject and avoids unnecessary duplication across the site.
Meta description
Write an accurate summary that helps the search result communicate what the visitor will find.
Heading structure
Keep one clear primary heading and use subheadings to organize the page rather than styling every line as a heading.
Structured data
Use relevant schema where it truthfully matches visible content, such as Article, FAQPage, Service, Organization or BreadcrumbList.
Image text alternatives
Use meaningful alt text for informative images and avoid keyword-stuffed descriptions for decorative graphics.
Technical SEO still has to feel good to a human.
Responsive layouts
Check for horizontal scrolling, narrow cards, broken headings and navigation problems on real mobile widths.
Form usability
Verify fields are readable, tappable and functional on phones without requiring zoom.
Caching
Use page and asset caching appropriately, then clear cache after major site changes so visitors receive the current version.
Image weight
Compress and resize final images before upload; use modern formats where practical.
Plugin discipline
Keep only the plugins that have a clear job. Redundant plugins can add code, conflicts, maintenance overhead and security exposure.
Verify the live result.
Recheck the live URLs, forms, sitemap, canonicals, redirects, mobile layout and important internal links after launch. A technically correct staging site does not guarantee a technically correct public site.
The checklist is intentionally practical rather than exhaustive. The right depth depends on the size, risk and complexity of the site.
Strategy, digital development, research, documentation and project systems built to make complex work clearer and more useful.
